Nokia have announced their latest Symbian smartphone – the Nokia 808 PureView at this years Mobile World Congress (MWC 2012), the handset which runs Symbian Belle, boast an incredible 41 mega pixel camera with Carl Zeiss optic, with oversampling technology which according to Nokia improves low light performance and it apparently captures five times more light.

The technology means that taking typically sized shots (say, 5 megapixels) the camera can use oversampling to combine up to seven pixels into one “pure” pixel, eliminating the visual noise found on other mobile phone cameras. On top of that, you can zoom in up to 3X without losing any of the details in your shot – and there’s no artificially created pixels in your picture, either. [Nokia]

Its pretty obvious the main feature of the Nokia 808 would be the camera, with the ability to record full high definition video in 1080p at 30 frames per second and it also features 4x loss less Zoom, and can capture 720P HD video at 6x zoom and up to 12X lossless zoom in nHD (640 x 360) recordings.

The Nokia 808 does have pretty medium end specifications (1.3GHz CPU, 512MB RAM) and a critically dying Symbian operating system, so the question on most peoples mind would be – why put a beast of a camera on a mutt of a phone? I would have expected Nokia to create a super smartphone based on a better operating system such as WP7 or Meego. Well we will have to find out for ourselves when its released in Europe in May 2012 for a RRP of 450 Euros, no South Africa release details yet. You can see samples images in full resolution over at Nokia’s website
