MTN Launches 3 New BlackBerry Internet Service Plans

MTN has launched three new BlackBerry Internet Service plans at reduced rates and will implemented data caps. This news comes as rival local mobile operators – 8ta and Cell C launched their new BIS plans in late June 2012 - which offered BlackBerry Messaging and Social services at R30 and R27 per month respectively.
MTN’s existing BlackBerry Internet Service plan will still be available at R59 per month, the network said. “BlackBerry Internet Service gives customers unlimited access to BlackBerry data services from their BlackBerry smartphones,” [MTN Press Release]
MTN’s new BIS plans are as follows: (A R1/MB out-of-bundle charge is applicable on these plans)
| BIS Plan | Data Cap | Monthly Cost |
| BlackBerry Messaging plan | 10MB | R14.95 |
| BlackBerry Social plan | 10MB | R19.95 |
| BlackBerry Social and Email plan | 25MB | R29.95 |
MTN’s cheaper plans will be capped, however. The BlackBerry Messaging and Social plans will have a 10MB cap, while the Social and Email plan will have a 25MB cap. [MTN Press Release]
The news of 10MB and 25MB data caps for BIS is quite shocking but I assume Cell C and 8ta have implemented similar data caps but have not disclosed this information. Only time will tell if these new BIS plans are a win or loss for our local mobile operators.
